Sketchbook Sunday 2/4/2018

When I conceived the idea that became Tiffany & Corey back in early 2017, I wanted to make sure the concept would work.  As such, I drew two rough gag cartoons in pencil.

This is one of the two cartoons.

This will be the last of the Sketchbook Sunday segments.  I've decided to end it early to not only concentrate on drawing cartoons but also because of negative reactions.

Just a pencil and colored pencil sketch here of Tiffany - I had it in my mind what she looked like but it took time to put it down on paper.

Sketchbook Sunday 1/21/2018

Welcome back, readers, to another edition of Sketchbook Sunday!  Now let's take a look at yet another thumbnail sketch.

As I explained last time, I only occasionally do thumbnail drawings of Tiffany & Corey cartoons.  Since this creation of mine emphasizes humor over plot, continuity, drama and so on, it does not require the sheer level of preparation and work that my arthouse comics Sunnyville Stories do.  But I digress.

This is what I came up with before doing the Friend For Lunch cartoon.  I thought the Frankenstein monster here didn't look grotesque or shocking enough.  In this case, the humor relies on anticipation.  We know Tiffany is about to get a big surprise when she sees Corey's "friend" so I came up with the character in the final cartoon linked above.

Sketchbook Sunday 1/14/2018

Hello, readers.  From today until the last Sunday in March, there'll be a feature here called "Sketchbook Sundays".  I'll share with you rough work of all kinds regarding Tiffany & Corey!

Anyway, let's get on with the show.

In contrast to Sunnyville Stories which is more "artistic", Tiffany & Corey tends to be more spontaneous.  Sometimes I may do thumbnails to determine characters used, composition and placement of props.  I usually don't do this but there are times I will do this.

This was a rough sketch for one of the early Tiffany & Corey cartoons way back in June 2017.  

The caption you see above was what I finally settled on.  I tried a few other combinations like "sodium", "fat" and "cholesterol" but I thought MSG sounded the funniest.  I also debated using King Kong instead of Superman.

When it comes to drawing over and over again, it's useful to have references and model sheets.  I wanted to keep a consistent size for both Tiffany and Corey so I came up with this.

Likewise, designing the character of Corey was no easy task.  The head design had to be right - the first few attempts I tried looked weird.
